Many different large cichlids in one tank... how do i keep some from attacking others

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sometimes structure in a tank only ADDS to aggression. In an empty tank there are no disputes over territory, just dominance. Dominance can get sorted out, but territories always squeeze someone out.

I have found add a lot of hiding spots helps. It is an important part of a cichild territory. Sometime you just have to remove fish. Africans and SA/CA don't work that well together. They communicate differently and have different water requirements.

hi welcome to mfk. just to let you know if you want to ask a question about your fish then start your own thread instead of asking in someone elses thread. thats just derailing the thread. to awnser your question most of the time they will do fine together:):)

i thiink if there wild or close to being wild they need diff water requirements but most african have been line bred so long there all in the same water in lfs as the sa/ca cichlids. like the other guy said i think you should remove the frontosa because they do better in groups and cannot defend themselves against some of those other fish you have in there. im guessing your biggest probelm is your flowerhorns are making the trouble correct? if you have a couple flowerhorns going nuts on your other fish there isnt much you can do about it besides taking them out and putting them in there own tank. i think if you did that the others would be fine. if its just a eating issue and not a aggression issue feed them large sinking and floating pellets then they have there choice to go up or down to feed depending on where the bullies are feeding.

Regarding the water requirements of Africans, SAs and CAs many fish actually DO have the same requirements.

Assuming you're talking about Rift Lake Africans, their water is very similar to almost every CA cichlid out there. Also, SA has lots of habitats that aren't soft & acidic. You just have to match up the fish properly.

I don't mix continents personally, but I know of several experience aquarists who use African Mbuna as dithers in their CA breeding tanks.

a lot of people disagree with this but its true. I have a 2'x4' section of my tank with nothing and when my fish go there, no one seems to fight. Its only in the rest of the tank where pots rocks and plants alolow for fish to defend territories.

i have a few aggressive fish togther in my 75 and i only have 2 claypots everyone gets along fine.

1 bb
2 gt
3 fm
3 pink cons
2 black cons

biggest is almost 4 inches

for one your biggest is almost 4 inches so the gt and bb are not close to adults and those are pretty laiid back fish compared to adult size flowerhorns and that 75 will be jammed packed when there all full size. hope thats a grow out tank:WHOA:

I never though about that before. But it makes sence. If they don't have territorys to fight over they don't have a need to fight as much. But that would make for a boring looking tank I love aquascapeing. You can add 100s of caves but some will be better then others and they will fight for the cave with a view, Or the one with the large master bath.

Anyways I find that with cichlids they have lots of personality and some just don't get along no matter what you do. Just like some people just don't like eachother. I would watch to see who the biggest problem is and think about getting him a new home.

Yes we really need some photos it sounds like a cool tank.
