hi recently i have observed numerous tiny bubbles at the surface that dont pop quickly( im not sure how to explain but i think you get what i mean) and the water film looks kinda thick. i do 20% water changes weekly. what do the bubbles tell me about the water? does it mean something bad? thanks!!

Got a gourami or betta in the tank?

This is generally cuased by a film of partly degraded protiens and the best treatment is increased surface agitation.

Fatty acids used as binders in foods such as floating pellets are notorious for causing this in my experience. A power head will turn over the surface and provide the added oxygen needed to break down the oily film. Feed oily foods sparingly and remove any that aren't eaten within a few minutes.

what size powerheads would be suitable for my 50gal tank? do i aim the powerhead at the surface?thanks alot!

If you're using a stess coat type product or melafix, this can also cause bubbles.

i have an eheim liberty and another hob..most probably its underfiltered so i do water changes very often. once every 2 days. nope no live plants! im gonna get a powerhead, anyone has a suggestion for a fairly cheap and good one?
