So browsing online i found a single piece of manzanita that will fill my 55 gallon. it will cost me about 135$ to buy and ship due to its size, its 48x10x22. i figure i can trim it down just enough to fit into my tank. my concern is will manzanita deteriorate and how fast. i have a freshwater tank about 78F and ph is approx 7.5 thanks for your time

manzanita won't deteriorate, but it's up to you if you think it's worth it dollar wise. Sounds like a big piece, but you can compare it to pieces manzman, a vendor here, has for sale to see if it's a reasonable price.

Be warned, it is difficult to cut. It can be done, I've cut and drilled it, but it's not the easiest...

i am patient and have access to a large variety of tools, the old man is a diy carpenter.

patience and tools. check. should be fine fitting it into your tank.

for the price question, look at manzman, he's got reasonable prices to see if you're getting a decent deal.

Manz looks good for a few months at best. It loses all its color and becomes the usual moldy water logged wood color. it bleeds a constant white fuzz as well. Only upside is the wide array of shapes it comes in. also in my opinion its way over priced. I know its only a west coast thing but come on, its wood.

I got a nice piece from manzman about 2 years ago, it looks great. You will get the white stuff during the breaking in period. My flagtail eats it off though--think of it as free food = )
