Maracyn and planted tanks

Maracyn or any other antibiotic does exactly what it implies kills bacteria. And it will kill your beneficial bacteria just as it kills the harmful bacteria. Using maracyn in a main tank will cause you to have to recycle your tank. i made the mistake a while ago and lost several expensive payara fish. Around 600$ dollars worth to be exact because after the parasites were treated the tank started to cycle unknown to me and a ammonia spike killed everything in it.--------------It is highly recommended to take the sick fish out of the main tank and put them in a hospital tank to treat them with this antibiotic.

:iagree:

As a side note...... it's been a while, but I don't remember it hurting my plants though.

You still will have another cycle because it will kill the bacteria that are in your substrate and attached to other surfaces in the tank.

I've not used Maracyn in planted tanks, but cycling won't happen in a planted tank, if it has enough plants.

I don't exactly understand your meaning. Do you mean that with enough plants, cycling wont be neaded becauses of the effects of the plants on the water. Or, do you mean, cycling wont be possible with the plants in the water?

Plants take up ammonia faster than nitrite or nitrate. If you have enough plants, a filter is moot, as the ammonia cannot build to a toxic level.
