You can tell because true gar all have a "Rounded Tail". My video card is failing on this PC so everything is kinda grainy/blurry and I can still see the forks on the tails in the pic.

Another clear indicator is whether or not they come up for air. If it doesn't breathe air from the surface, it's either a false gar or a dead true gar.

...or it's a bowfin, a lungfish, a bichir, a tarpon, an African bonytongue, an arapaima... :)

LOL okay I was actually referring to the Characins that are commonly mislabeled and mistaken for gars. But, you're right. :D In fact, my statement proves it's a betta, a cory cat, etc... hmmm... maybe photo ID is best.

Well, everyone posts about non-ancient gymnotiform knifefish in the ancient fish "knifefish" section, I can't see how posting about faux-gar in the Gar forum is any different.
