Probably a Marbled (a.ka. Spotted) Pike Characin, Boulengerella maculata

If it's a true gar, then who knows....all sorts of weird names given to gars.

Totally agree. For example, I bought both of my Florida/spotteds as Marbled Gar, since that's what the distributor was selling them as. BUT, I knew that ahead of time, so that's why I ordered them. If you're LFS orders from Chicago there's a good chance that is the same distributor.

With all the crappy common names out there, it could be anything. We'd need a pic to give a proper id.

Ill buy them tomorrow and see if what kind of gars they are :)

yup... IDing gars is pretty much useless without pics.

You're going to buy a fish that you have no idea what it is or the husbandry required to properly house it? that sounds like a great idea!

marbled gar-(Boulengerella maculata)
also
maculata gar-Boulengerella maculata (Spotted Pike Characin, Peruvian Gar )
