Marble motoro's.Interesting observation don't you think?

Interesting read Alan.
Nice rays by the way.Notice the dark 2" rim(base colour) scatered with neat round yellow spotting around the outer disc of this type of Marble, this seems to be a trait of these rays, these spots are usually arranged in 3 tidy rows and very round as appose to irregular smudges.
Anyone else noticed these differences featured so far?

The female CB in the pics I suspect will stay small. Judging by parents of the male I expect him to be larger, falling between the "mini" Marbles, and standard Marbles. Will be very suprised if he doesn't top out in the 12-15" range.

I will post pics tonight of all the wild caughts that I've had for 2+ years. None have put on more then 3 inches. Females seem to grow about an inch a year, males seem even slower.

Very intresting observation in regards to the ring. Gonna have to say that in my personal experience this seems to hold true, provided the ray is light enough to see the dark ring. This ring does sure seem to hold true on many of the recent imported preggo mini marbles. Does seem to me that the smudged ones seem to be medium sized in most cases.

What does the perimeter ring on your adult pair look like Richard?

My original pair have more irregular long chainlink around the outer disc and more random spotting, the male has what i describe as finger markings around the trailing edge of the disc, most of my pups have carried this trait' these thin black markings face away from the disc...see pic.I will also incorporate a sketch of the new wave of Marbles with the 3 rows of spots, many of these spots have real definition but not always but the spots are generally visible on this type of ray,all depends on the quality of the fish.
Alan these spots can clearly be seen on your avatar on that very nice example of this smaller Marble we speak of.
Sorry for the poor sketches but hopefully you all get the idea.

Agree 100%.

I have an even better example of the outer perimeter spotting with my personal favorite from my collection. She's actually is only 1 of 2 Marbles I've seen carrying 4 rows of perimeter spots. This ray has some of (in my opinion) the nicest Marbling I have ever seen. Almost seems as though most of the black lines travel a great majority of her back without ever breaking. Not exactly ideal if you're into the "clear base" or lack of Marbling but if you enjoy an intricate unbroken bold Marbling line then she is an ideal specimen.

I do believe we may be on to something..... Cut and dry- probobly not, as with fishkeeping there is always a few special examples that won't fall within these guidelines BUT I think for a majority we might be able to pin down some rough guesses on max size simply by perimeter spotting. This may not be true on the monster Marbles but for the most parts I think the fingers or smudges could mean medium sized and the dots could mean midget marble.

Taking these things into account I'll take a close look at my rays tonight and see who's got what.

There's only 1 problem I see with this and that is the fact that during mating "dances" the female may loose say up to an inch of her outter perimeter of disk and when it grows back sometimes it is dark and patternless or blurred. This could be mistaken as smudges or "fingers" or the opposite, that dark ring.

Intresting is a drastic understatement. I am very excited about this. The speculations I have running through my head....... lol

Thats a really good observation, I notice the different in different batches of marbles as well. I think your observation is true for the better quality marbles.

This girl's been here almost 2.5 years. She showed up around 6-6.5". I'd say she's about 9 now. Pattern keeps improving. She's a much deeper orangish hue compared to my other Marbles.

Here's the midget male. Showed up a lil over 2 years ago. Was mature at 7" when he got here. Might be 9 now. Smallest and only male in the 750. May have his first bun in the oven already. ;)
