I haven't posted for a while so thought I would snap a few pics of my marble pair whilst doing a water change. Both are somewhere between 8-9". The male is beginning to marble up but the pattern on the female is still barely visible. Im hoping their patterns start to really develop over then next few months.

Male

Female

Tank mates

They both have nice spotting, I like the males perimeter spotting

Hi Steve,
I have to say I was hoping for these to show more marbling by now, I have had one or two over the years that showed poor marbling even at adult size but these are both very dark base colour, as I remember we picked this pair because of the light base....bizarre! What are your parameters? is the bottom of the tank mainly black? I have just got one back from an earlier batch at work, this ray is 12" disc and looks magnificent apart from the fact it was born with a deformed tail which needed amputation, we call it stumpy. If my memory serves me right the small Marble you part exchanged for these two was extremely dark also when you brought it back (not one of mine). These are still small and its quite possible they could be late developers. Keep me\us updated with any progress, if they don't make the grade then I will sort you something out Steve, swap them with another pair or something, I want you to be happy. Lets give them a while longer yet, its still early days.

The male has great spotting, we need some marbling thrown in there with it though.

Hi Richard,

Your right these were a light base pair. The base of the tank is mostly black as is the back of the tank. Ive just got a bit of gravel in there to try to lighten it a bit otherwise it is difficult to see the red hooks.

PH is 7 and nitrates 0.

The male looks like it has got loads of marbelling just waiting to pop, the female just seems to be developing slower although she is ever so slightly bigger than the male.

Im debating getting some sand to lighten the tank further as I have been wondering if it is the dark base that is making them look darker. Sometimes I will walk in and they look very light (the pictures also make them look a little darker than they actually are) but they are generally darker.

Rays do tend to like to blend into the substrate Steve, try the lighter sand and lets see what happens.

Cheers mate!
