Magnus_Bane Magnus_Bane Could some floating plants help? they stay at the top I think so would it still not work if their is plants?

sorry if it sounds like im not listening the addvise is really great just trying to find a cool oddball and I really like the looks of them
Well the main issue with an actual gar is they will just get too big for the tank. Generally a good rule of thumb is to make certain the tank is twice as wide as the fish is long so that the fish has no troubles turning around.

Magnus_Bane Magnus_Bane Yes most true gars get over two ft but the charicins are closer to tetra than actual gar charicins only get around 12 Inch usual that still gives them 6 inchs to turn around and they are abush predators so they wont move much anyways

O ok yeah that would work. Apparently the crocodile pike is part of that family as well. I think the specie I mentioned was just a bit smaller at 6in max size.

Personally I like belonesox better tho. I just mainly like how their Jaws hinge backwards compaired to most fish. Their top jaw is the part that moves rather then the bottom jaw. Really neat to see em eat too with how they shovel the prey into their throat using their top jaw. They are also pretty easy to sex, just think of how ya would sex a guppy and it's the same for these. Their also a live bearer.

O yeah they're just spotted gar. They'll end up a bit too big for a 75g imo, also they will lose the horizontal line that cuts Tru their body.
By “spotted gar” do you mean to imply that they are Lepisosteus oculatus? If so, the fish pictured originally is not Lepisosteus oculatus.

No thats just a nick name a more appropriate name would be spoted charicin I know that spoted gar are super rare and get over 2ft but Boulengerella maculata only gets 12 inchs

They are pretty cool thanks for showing me but im not sure that they would work with my Jack Dempsy But the fact that they are live bearers and predators is cool!
JD could go after them. Not a sturdy fish and easily spooked and stressed.
