Hi.

I have a chance to pick up some Amphilophus Margaritifer (is what they are listed as)
But i have heard some talk saying they are Astatheros Margaritifer?

If someone can clarify for me what the deal is, and what this fish is, that would be very helpful :)

I didn't even think there was a consensis on if this fish is even real. If you search around you find completely different looking fish labled as Margaritifer in pictures.

Who's selling Margaritifer? The fish is basically extinct.
A dealer in my country who gets them out of Germany.
Let's just say the members of this club hes in has wrote many of the descriptions on the SA/CA fish and alot of africans aswell. Those that are still with us that is.
One of the fellow owners, Charlie Niller Sørensen, got a bay named after him by Ad Konings in 2001

The only reason why i was able the establish this connection, is because Carsten Gissel, my employer has been catching in the game his entire life, and also has a few fish named after him, and he happens to know the chairman of the club, who by chance was out eating lunch at our pet store, just when i had my break, and we got into talking etc. etc. etc.

I've seen some discussion on that fish. It's clear it is not margaritiferus (as has already been said, that fish is likely either extinct or not definitively identified), but that name has recently been stuck on a fish that some consider a race or distinct species related to robertsoni, alfari, etc.

That's definitely an interesting fish to keep based on the uncertainty of its status (and its great looks!). There is a similar discussion on cichlidae.com with a couple of collection photos......but, unfortunately, no definitive answer as to its identification.

Interesting!
I wasn't even aware of it being more than just commonly rare. (alot of fish that are just rare for us up here, are "extinct" in the US almost)

I'll ask Ole what his take on this fish is, as he is quite knowledgeable aswell, but i have just learned that it is always best to ask on here first, since i have been scammed more than once by just listening to the sellers opinion.
Usually MFK gives a great objective view by alot of experienced members aswell.

There are a few people keeping this species here in the UK. Until there can be some definite clarification as to whether it may be Margaritifer, or another species of Astatheros, (closely related to Robertsoni) these are being referred to as Astatheros Robertsoni 'Lancetilla' .
