I was wondering how to take care of them and stuff. How much light do they need? how fast do they grow? how do I like propogate them? and what happens if i tear them apart?
"Domestic Marimo can be grown in tap water at room temperature and be given small amounts of liquid fertilizer with half water changes on a weekly basis. The amount of light it needs varies from source to source. Some places say this plant needs high light while others say it requires little more than ambient light."
"It grows slowly. It can survive low or high light...in high light oxygen bubbles may form which will cause the "algae ball" to float to the top.
The form of the plant is filaments which grow outward from a central fragment...if the plant is fragmented, then each fragment can eventually grow into a new ball. I recently had one which grew from about 6 cm diameter to maybe 12 cm diameter, which was too big for best decorative effect...this growth took about 12 months. I cut the ball into maybe 50 small pieces - each one is now making a new ball. My tanks that contain these algae balls would probably be labeled as low light / low tech tanks. Soil substrate, some natural light, minimal liquid fertilization of the water column. Natural light does seem to stimulate growth of this algae."
