I'm pretty sure both of them have done research and work with gars so they may be able to help

If you want to work with gars, look at fisheries biology. There are plenty of schools that focus on fisheries and or marine. My major in college was aquaculture and fisheries biology. I learned very little about marine sciences but the focused major gave me allot of tools and knowledge to get a job in the field
