Marine or not to Marine

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the filtration is fine... i would stock with a french angel a lamarks angel and for dwarf angels get a cherub a coral beauty a eibles and a potters... that would be an ausome tank!

Is it okay if I just keep the fluval? Do I need a sump/fuge for this tank? Having just the fluval filled with mechanical and bio would be cheaper, since I already have it.

you fish only marine tank will probably be a failure if you dont get a very good skimmer, always get a skimmer rated for more then tank size.

if you gonna try to be cheap about filtration it will cost more in the long run. most properily setup FO salt tanks dont really need water changes, because they have a good skimmer and a lot of base rock. for good measure people have a fuge too for any nitrates the anerobic bacteria leave.

Way to be positive and give good advice. No tank really needs a skimmer especially a fowlr. Yes they are a nice piece of equipment to have and no because you have a good skimmer doesn't mean that you don't need to change you water. Here's a few examples of sps tanks that do not have skimmers. And if you search for Steve Tyree he uses a cryptic organism based natural filtration method. not a skimmer

Yeah, I didn't think a protein skimmer was neccessary. I thoyught they were only needed in reef tanks because you need fine water params.

So, is my Fluval enough?

It runs 3500lph. I get 3 Hydor Koralia at $109ea, that pump 1500lph, that equals 8000lph which is close enough to 10x over. Could I drop 1 power head and just have 6500lph?

I say yes i have a 180 fowlr that is skimmer less and i only have good live rock and an eheim canister running the tank, also power heads for flow. With regular weekly maintenance i have not had a problem in my tank in the six years it has been up. If you were to have a sump i would run it as a refugium.

I would suggest a wet/dry for saltwater that way you have room for a skimmer. I changed from a SA tank to salt and have loved it ever since. Word of advice if you going to do several angels add them all at once angels are very aggressive to other angels once a territory has been established.

those tanks have very lil bioload in fish. its easy for natural filtration to keep up with the demand. the skimmer takes out most of the fish waste before it can be broken down into nitrates. i also mentioned a refugium which will also remove waste.

a fresh water person used to having around 1 inch per gallon stocking, will typically over stock a salt water tank. this will create a need for alot of water changes. water changes are expensive in saltwater, because of the saltmix.

a FOWLR needs a skimmer more in my opinion since like i said it will be more heavily stocked then a reef.

practically every tank listed there has a skimmer because they are one of the most effective filtration methods in a marine aquarium. nothing to be laughed at.

so way to give good advise thats gonna make his tank harder to take care off. i can be a jerk too see;)

once you have a good skimmer, and see the rediculous amount of vomit inducing crud it pulls out you will wonder how you ever lived with out it.

my 135 salt predator setup is this

300 wet/dry
75 lbs. live rock
140 lbs live sand
RS 135 protein skimmer with a cedra 5000 pump
2 koralia 4's
Mag 18 system pump

My bio load is high I have to do 35 gallon water changes every Tues. or my nitrates would be insane.

For any reef tank i don't think that that is a small bio load at all. Fish and corals both produce waste and those tanks are full of sps.

I think that we can both agree that the inch per gallon rule does not apply to salt water at all.

I have never laughed at having a skimmer. Don't get me wrong they are great pieces of equipment to have, but not necessary. There are other means of nutrient export, such as macro algae refugiums or turf scrubbers. On my fo tank i do not run a skimmer cause i don't feel that i need it as long as i keep up with my regular maintenance, but on my reef tank i wouldn't run the tank without it, but that just my opinion. Think of it like a calcium reactor a nice piece of equipment to have but not at all necessary there are other methods to control calcium.

Sorry if i came off a bit rude before. ;)
