Marine Pure Placement

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The tank is on the floor so I don't think I have any options for a sump or trickle filter. I have a couple sponge filters inside the tank also.

I never have my trickle filters under the tank. I pump water via a hose up on a drip-plate then lets it run back to tank via a bulkhead. 20181008_154119.jpg 20181008_154107.jpg

I place the spheres in canister filters as they are very rugged and rely on them to reduce nitrites. I place the thick blocks directly in my tank where it gets some flow...Marine Pure claims anaerobic bacteria can colonize the inner part of the block since it’s so porous and can help with nitrate reduction. I haven’t tested it but don’t fully feel comfortable with that claim so I still do regular water changes. I don’t use their cubes in filters since they are so brittle and break apart easy with some jostling but the big blocks work great in sumps or directly in tank. I use Aquaclears just for mechanical like someone else said since they are easy to access to squeeze out the sponge.

You can put some spheres on top of the sponge in your Aquaclear for both mechanical and biological and simply place the block in your tank near some flow if you don’t have a sump. The outer part of the block will remove nitrites (aerobic bacteria) and the inner block will supposedly grow anaerobic bacteria to help with nitrates.

I ended up filling 4 of the new seachem 110 hob filters with the spheres on low flow and the 2 aquaclear 110's on low flow putting the sponges right on the intake and in the whole filter compartment I situated the blocks.
The blocks are more fragile than I thought so I might change it up and just put them in a corner of my tank with a powerhead aimed on them.
Thanks for all the ideas!

Sounds goods good but you don’t need low flow for the spheres or the 2” cubes. If you have the big 8x8x4 inch block, those need slower flow and do best in sump or in tank. Yeah, and I hate how brittle the cubes and blocks are. They make a mess. The spheres are by far better for high flow
