Marine vs Freshwater

Honestly, i would say the amount of work you work have to put into a Planted Freshwater tank, VS a Saltwater Tank would more or less be the same... since depending on the types of plants you use, you'll more or less have to trim them every week once its all grown in properly...

On the other hand, if you were to do a straight Freshwater tank with just fish and hardscape, i could see your parents possibly willing to help out, and actually able to keep up with the load while your away for school IF they have an interest in keeping fish...

Yeah IMO the planted tank just seems like more work then a saltwater.

I would just wait till you're up there then set it up. You'll have too much crap to move anyway without the added stress of settin up the tank before all the fish get too stressed out.

Marine or freshwater? Gotta have both :) ....but ime saltwater is extremely easier to maintain than fresh even in nano tanks. It can be more expensive but not always. Ive ran marine 10's, 20's 30's, with h.o.b.'s and no skimmer just fine with fish. Heck ive even used just sponge filters at times in small salt tanks.

Advise: Stop typing "lol" all the time. It makes you sound not so smart (regardless of true intellect).

As for the fish tank...That's your decision. But I know I wouldn't have wanted to take care of a tank when I was in college. I had too much else going on. Also, if you don't know your roomate and are moving into dorms, that's pretty cramped quarters. I know my old dorm roomate wouldn't have wanted a tank taking up precious space.

My advise is to go to college for a semester and then figure out what you want to do.
