This canister filter seems to be the one that offers the gph i would like and comes with filter media at initial purchase.

Would it be a good idea to use the entire inside space for biofiltration and have the intake tube modified for mechanical filtration

Trying to accomplice a canister filter that has 200gph or greater , with 80% of filtration being bio and the other 20 % being mechanical.

comments and ideas are welcome

this is for my 25 gallon tank.

Also if yah know of a diy canister filter that i can do that will cost less than 150 dollars that will accomplice the above, please let me know.

You don't need to fill 80% of a canister that size with biomedia for a 25 gallon tank. That'd be ludicrously overdoing it. Maybe 10-30%.

If you're spending $150 anyway, might as well go for the filter manufacturer everyone seems to rave about and get an eheim 2217.

trying not to spend 150

can never be to much biomedia i might do a 60/40 ratio of bio to mechanical.

I love Marineland filters. You won't need to modify it in any way, IMO. It does just fine with the media that comes with it (yes, comes with it! Big, big plus.)

Would this Marineland H.O.T. Magnum - 250 G.P.H. filter allow me not to use the media that comes with it, but to instead use all the biomedia and mechanical filtration i want, this is more in my price range.

The hot magnum isn't very configurable, but it is great at polishing water with the micron cartridge. If you get the hot magnum pro system then it'll come with a large bio-wheel - which should be well more than enough for your 25 gallon tank. Even a crazy overstocked 25 gallon tank. However, the bio-wheel outlet spills into the tank like a HOB filter, meaning you won't really be able to configure it with a spray bar.

I think you'd do just great with any of the following filters:
eheim 2213 or 2215
penn plax cascade 500, 700 or 1000 (which I actually like)
rena XP1
marineland c160, 220

If you could tell me more about why you need so much flow and so much media, I'd be able to make further suggestions. The cheapest canister in that list is the cascade 500 at only $60, but it does only have 115 gph.

Well i would like to keep a couple of plecos.

well i went to petco looked into some filtration boxes and saw that , hell these filters are expensive pieces of shiet, I am able to diy better ones with just a bucket,powerhead/pump, and some vinyl tubing for less than 40 dollars if i bought everything new, and it would be a stronger bio and mechanical filter, and hell i would only need chemical filtration after using meds for sick fish to get better.

I did look into all the recommended filters and came up with the above conclusion. Thanks everyone that posted for your help.
