Marineland Emperor 400 Filter?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have 4 of them. My first is extremely quiet, one is normal (as loud as an ac110) and the other two are a bit louder, but not as loud as some filters I have had. I still like them those, especially for their biowheels, plus they come with a spray bar (great idea) and a grey container thing that I put biomax in, but that is just my setup.
All in all, my favorite HOB filter. Switched from owning 5 ACs, smallest being AC70.

I have a few,and like them a lot. The only problems I have had with them getting noisy is when I have run them in tanks with sand substrate.

I recently just got a used one that came with a tank. I like it so far, a lot of space for media. Gotta get me some wheels for it though. Couple of questions though:

What is the size or classification for the correct biowheel for it?

What is the spray bar 4 and which direction should it be pointing?

I believe all the wheels are universal.
I have had two for about 15 years, took one out of commision about 4-5 months ago, still worked great just was getting louder and I had new ones to take its place. I also love their canisters.

all the big penguin filters are similar enough...

I use the 200B. I took out the bio-wheel. It caused more noise then I liked.

As for noise from the impeller, mine was really loud at first. I quickly got a replacement and that sorted it out... very quiet. I keep it in my bedroom. (as long as my water is high enough you can barely notice its hum.)

Once in a while the fish kick up sand and it wrecks the impeller... just need to disassemble the filter and dunk the area a few times in the tank and it'll eventually wash out the sand and voila, back to normal.

Also I don't like how when the pads get too dirty the water will flow around it... not a well designed filter, but imo it's better in terms of sound then the AC's... AC's beat the penguins for filtration.

I like them. When I returned to the hobby after an 11 year layoff I plugged in 2 old 400s that I had and they worked just fine and are running right now.
