Marineland Emperor 400 Filter?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've used Emperor 400 and AC110 in the past. If you're looking for a HOB Filter, I think either one is good. AC110 are simple and the flow rate is great. The media last longer. The current from an AC110 can be a bit strong (depending on fish you keep) and no matter on the adjustment, it can still be strong without DIYing it. Emperors seem to aerate the water more. The spray bar can be adjusted to control the flow. The only thing with Emperors are the cartridges that needs replacing. Seems that they need to be replaced more often then AC110 Media.

If you want go Canister, there are plenty of Canisters out there that does a good job. You can go with brands like Eheim, Fluval, or Rena, but JBJ makes a good Canister filter that comes with a UV sterilizer that I've used on a 50g tank before and it worked real well.

i like both the marineland and the ac filters , but the emp gets more costly in the long run due to replacing media cartridges. the ac110 is probably the most popular hob in mfk .search some of the threads that compare emperor 400 and ac110 . they're both good and each has its devotees .
Alright man, thanks alot.

So i was looking at these and Im wondering which ones would be the best for a 55? I was thinking maybe the Rena xp3 or the Eheim 2217. I know overkill is good when it comes to filtration, but would those be too overkill? Could I get away with lower power models?

I think you'll be fine just going with the 400's. I don't use mine anymore but when I did, I ran them with no cartriges. That's just me though, I'm a vacaholic;)
