what the heck is up with the dang emp. 400?!!
some peo[ple told me it isnt too noisy and i bought that beast and its like having a VW bug on idle in my bedroom.
for right now im unplugging the stupid thing during the night,I dont know if thats such a bad thing but i need to do it becouse the damn emperor sounds like a lawn mower or something.
sometimes if i take it apart and put it back togethor or just mess with it for a bit than the noise calms down slightly, but it always come back after like a few hours to a day.

anybody have this problem?its driving me crazy........Im thinking of putting the old filter back on at the cost of my tank being a bit underfiltered........

first make sure that the flow adjuster is all the way up. second take the impeller out an clean it. I have a problem with some snails getting in mine.. after that without hearing it I wouldn't know.. they do make noise though so if you are one that has to have it completly quiet in your room this is probably not the filter for your bedroom area.

Are you using sand as a substrate?

now there is always background sounds of some sort present but the only time i've noticed any distracting noise coming from my emps is whenever the flow adjust is squeezed shut. i imagine you're having this problem even when the filter is "like new", hella clean?

yeah ive had it for about two weeks and the noise aint as bad as it was but its not gone like the manual said it would be after 48 hours.I have it on a 29 gallon so I had a sponge in the intake strainer (not using the extention or the mid level strainer) in an attempt to reduce the flow.
I guess the sponge was getting dirty too fast and cousing too much strain on the motor so i took that out and the noise was reduced.I still have the media chamber stuffed to the max with filter floss, carbon, and zeolite crystals to slow the flow.is it possible to have too much media in the media chambers?to the point where it might be making some noise?the impellor is clean as hell so i know it aint that.
my emperor 400 is some new model without any flow adjusters.somebody told me i should contact them about that and i did, they said the flow adjuster had been removed due to vibration noise complaints.......WTF?
Doesnt seem to have helped.
also i am using aragonite for substrate.
I never expected this beast to be silent but this crap sounds like a lawnmower, you know?cant be normal.....

Its the flow restiction thats causing the noise, noticed the same thing with mine with the older one when I choked down the flow during feedings.I have one of the newer ones too and it gets noisy if it gets plugged up.

its very possible you've overstuffed the filter and i'm guessing that'll make your filter chug. i've gotten used to just using mech floss pads cut to fit the cartridge slots in the emp. not much noise and solid flow. so less media might reduce the noise. i remember the 48 hour grinds, and my emperors have never sounded that sick since.

right on guys thanks for your help i found what it was.its the intake tube,it rattles hella bad for some reason.i leaned a large rock against to hold it still and the noise is almost gone.the only noise coming from it now is the biowheels and i guess ill live with that.
