Want to get a take on the sexes of this group of five.... Found these pics on the net and I am really fascinated with this species, specially with all the recent posts on them as of late. Can some one help sex ? I see possibly two pairs there.

they were labeled as well so that identity was easier scar and biggie look like boys ....the one face to face with bigge is also looking like male .... with the two slimmer one being female...

I too have been recently intrigued by the amazing variants of this specie(s?). Too bad Id never be able to see the differences in person. :( Where there other pictures where ever those came from? Itd be nice to see their pattern.

This is comming from what I've read and seen from pics, again no personal experience but I'd say 3 males and 2 female.

Coming from the first pic, I would say the 2 on the left looking at eachother are the males. while scar is to. the rest look female

think you're right, bro

HI,

following the fact that marulioides is NOT a mouthbrooder, I dont think they can be sexed by the headshape.

And these five guys are imho long time away from beeing sexually mature.

Brucki,
How would you identify, the difference in sexes? I would think the female would have a more robust midsection for storage of eggs until they are viable for release? While the male having a larger head in the event it would need to grasp on the female to be able to coerce her into the right position for sperm induction? Is there any literature that you think could guide us in the correct direction ? I found nothing on google thus far.

Cheers!

HI varanio,

Channa literature is very seldom, and mostly very poor :-(
the only good thing is snakeheads.org, butI dont think they sex marulioides.

I agree that the females should be "fatter" in the belly region, but as already stated, these fish are too youg to go further.

Even with the easier sexable species its sometimes a Problem.
I thougt my female sp. Assam could be male (60%male 40%female) until the first breeding and egg feeding I knew for sure.
