STONEDFISH

Feeder Fish
MFK Member
I came home to tanks full of rotting food and dead fish....... even if you show somebody what to do....no one takes care of your fish like you do. Lesson learned...... don't go on vacation. RIP little buddies: Frontosa, White Angel, Leopard Pleco, and Blood Parrots (2, no pictures):(

Man that sucks. I guess you live and learn. Sorry to hear it man. How long where you on vacation?

That Sucks!!.. How long were you gone and was your routine. I've been on two week vacations with discuses and didn't lose any.

It's all about preperation up until you leave. IMO it is better to have clean water than fed fish. I wouldn't recommend this for juvie fish but adults should be fine.

I stop feeding my discus 3 days before I leave on my vacation. For these three days I do 60% WC each day. This will give them time to poop out all their stuff and leave you with cleaner water while you are gone. At least couple weeks prior to my departure I give them extra feedings to help build their reserves. Of course this limits my vacation to just two weeks. I wouldn't try anything longer.

Are you saying that during the two weeks your discus don't eat at all?

Yup. No food. I have adults so it isn't a problem for them, I wouldn't do this for juvies or fry. I've done this twice.

Interesting. I should try that too. Until now I always had someone feed the fish, but just leave them like that is a lot easier.

I was gone for a week. I had a friend of mine watch the fish. He came over the day we left and I showed him how to feed everything from the arowana to my turtles. I told him to come by once every other day and feed them... three times total for the week. I feed twice a day when I'm here... so I figured this wouldn't jeopardize the water quality. I did a 50% change on all tanks with the python gravel-vac the day we left. Everything was crystal clear.
There was rotten shrimp stuck to all the filter intakes when I got back yesterday.. my angel tank had evaporated to the point the filter didn't work, and my flowerhorn had turned almost grey.
I cleaned every tank and did another 50% change last night and everything looked good today when I got up... I'll break out my test kit after work today and check the water parameters.
The flowerhorn got his colors back already, so now I just got to go find me some new frontosa and an angel fish. No more odd plecos and parrot fish for now.

Sorry to hear that Stonedfish :( I hope you can get some new fish soon and find a better fish sitter.

I've left several various types of fish for 7-10 days at a time, and next lost 1 yet....
I usually do my normal tank clean/partial water change, check the filters 1-2days before I leave. feed them like normal, and then the day I leave, I toss in a couple feeder blocks...
sorry to hear about those losses

Howdy,

Sorry to hear about your loss.

I never put anyone (even the pet sitter) in charge of my fish. When I go on vacation, my fish go on a diet. I even hide the food in case the pet sitter feels sorry and wants to feed them.

That has worked for up to 3 consecutive weeks, w/o casualties.
