Mass Casualties from Christmas Vacation!! R.I.P.

Wow that’s real harsh luck buddy, sounds like you prepared for everything perfectly. But like Harley said, when you’re on vacation, the fish diet. Most adult fish can go for a week to two weeks without a meal anyway. And a yearly fasting probably does the fish more good than bad.

Next time you get someone to look after your fish I find its always best to write out detailed instructions, then go through it with the person. Most importantly show them a week before how to take care of your fish and then for that week get them to do everything with your supervision. That way you can pick up any mistakes they are making and correct it before you go. It sounds like your fish sitter was overfeeding by quite a large amount. Make sure the fish sitter has a good understanding of the fishes needs aswell, and write down things for the person to keep an eye out for. such as excess food, cloudy water, algea blooms, water level too low etc. There is no reason why you cant have a years vacation if your sitter is trained properly.

Last two vacations I went on I laid out premeasured portions in individual pill containers on the hood of each tank. That way all the fish sitter had to do was pop open the container and dump it into the tank it was on.
But I agree a week or two without food is fine for adult fish

Last time I went on a week long trip i pre measured fish food into sandwich bags (1 for each day) and instructed my wife to put 1 into each tank everyday (food not the bags!!! hahahaah!!!)......but skip a day in the middle somewhere. I left the bags ontop of each tank and all went well...................

..............................:WHOA:

 ...........................I started to do this because the trip before this, I simply instructed her to put a few jumbo NLS pellets into my sevrum tank daily..............NOT a few pinches daily, which of course she did............................:( Luckily none of the fish died (huge water change when i got back) but there was at least a hundred jumbo pellets in that tank floating and my sevs were fat as pigs!!!!!!!....lucky i guess!!!!:)

I agree that some adult fish can go a while w/o food , but if I dont feed my african cichlids at least every second day (I feed them every day & skip a day during the week) they start fin nipping and get real agressive..........:)

When I go on Vacation and have my mother in law take care of my fish, I make signs and post them on each tank telling her specific amounts of what to feed and how often. I know, it sounds babyish but I dont want dead fish when I come home. She actually listens quite well.
