Massive fish kill in my tank!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I added just a few drops in the first five gallon bucket and nothing in the second. I do water changes every two weeks or so (25-30%). I've used that method with these guys for 3+ years and never an issue. I don't have any power heads in the tank. It was all very sudden that's for sure. Just glad I was home to notice it. To make things what could've been worse, there's about 30 Juli Marlieri fry in there too. They all seem fine thank goodness, although I only get to see about a dozen at any given time. They like to hide in the rocks of course:) For those if you who have lost a favorite fish or two, imagine the feeling of losing an entire tank of hard-to-get fish never mind the fact that they were all adults that take two or more years to mature. I think I'll have a drink.. Lol

Man, glad to hear everything seems back to normal. I lost basically all of the stock in my first tank not thinking about oxygen levels. Over time my nitrates got out of hand (college got in the way of water changes sometimes), so I decided to do a couple of massive water changes in succession to get rid them. Unfortunately, oxygen levels didn't even cross my mind (first tank) and lost almost all of my fish, 15 or so adult african cichlids. By no means were these fish hard to come by, but I was certainly attached. To say the least it was a bad day, almost decided to quit the hobby and sell everything. Glad I didn't, but still a bad day...

Sorry you lost all if those cichlids. That makes for a miserable time an I hear you about wanting to quit. It can be quite an investment, especially while in college. I really just lucked out with it today. Luckily I read a thread not too long ago that mentioned something like that, otherwise I never would've thought of it. I haven't been spending to much time on here until recently as I just got a new tank and am finishing building another one... And finally had some time on my hands to do so. Hope all is well in the hobby for you now.

Had to break down the tanks about a year ago because the wife and I moved (graduated a little bit ago) and we are moving again very soon. Just didn't make sense to set the tanks up again for only 6 months. Besides, now that I have more knowledge I can get the stock I want and really set the tanks up the way I would like (still trying to decide actually). Currently looking for a full-time job, then we will be buying a house - then I can set all my tanks up again. Can't wait!!
