Hey guys I also considered myself as a poly senegal expert until now. Anyways, I keep three 4 inch senegals in a 30 gallon tank. They are perfectly peaceful buddies. Diaster struck today. I woke up in the early morning finding out that on of my albino senegals was "deadish". He was sidways motionless. When I got a net to fish him out, he gracefully darted away. Things got frantic inthe after noon when I returned from school. I saw both of my albino senegal sidways, motionless. I suspect that yesterday when I got a red wolf and I separated the bichirs and wolf with a friggin NEW AIR DUCT FILTER!!! How smart was I??? I think it was poisoning to my poor. I aslo realized that on of my poor affect fish had "blood" redness inside his mouth. Finally I could stand this anymore and I when to My LPS to find out what is happening to my bichirs. I brought a water test. I told him of what I suspect of the cause of this. He told me that it was actully the stress of my frequent 70% water changes that made my fish go aqward. he told me that the redness of my bichirs mouth was cause bacteria from the stress.
I bought a anti bacteria for my fish. Will this ease my fish's pain. Is the stress from frequent water changes the cause of this diaster?

OPIONs and good answers please

THANKS

If frequent large water changes atress fish, most discus keepers are doing it completely wrong.
I'd say the air duct filter is the cause of the problem, probably small particles from it. Personally, I'd do a massive water change, followed by another every day to remove whatever is in the water.
And I wouldn't go back to that LPS.

You should probably do only 25% water changes and it depends how many times a month you do a water change. Good luck with your fish.

If you want a pourous divider, you can use Pool Filter stuff. A plant guy I know uses this so his fry have somewhere to hide, and to keep adult pairs separated.

Ya that's probably a bacterial infection. When using the antibiotics remember to take out the carbon part of your filter as this will remove the medicine and render it completely useless.

Frequent large water changes are most definitely stressing the he'll out of the bichirs!

"massive" can be misconstrued. Go no more than 50% for weekly water changes. keep your water heated around 82* and add some salt to your tank.

The redness can be mild irritation to and infection. continue to use the ant-bacterial until the treatment is done.

Next time, ise inert materials like plastic, glass, fabrics, paper. Stay away from metals, sharp materials, and the like.

Actually it really depends on the water parameters of the water in the tank as well as the tap water.

If the pH and temp are similar (which most of the time isn't), you could do large amount of WC without stressing the fish. If you are planning on doing large wc, I suggest you prep the new water before replacing it.

You would need a heater, spare set of thermometer. A large bucket/tank to contain the 70% (21gallon) new water and pH buffer. As well as pH test strips to make sure the both the temp and pH matches that of the tank

And lastly, I hope your senegals makes it

In the 8 years I had my store, the standard operating procedure for new arrivals was daily 50-75% water changes every day for a week, then 50% every week. Kept losses almost non existant. Of course, we're blessed with our water here. pH 7.2, hardness just about 0.
All my personal tanks get 50% weekly changes. Especially CO2 injected planted tanks. I've yet to have any fish show stress from that, including many fancy plecos, discus, wild angels, etc. And the change water has a pH difference of 0.6
