Massive tank -Thailand

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
See it’s in my opinion and experience that there are at least two subtypes of gatf, while they both grow massively large and are apex predators, one is obviously broader top down and grow ridiculously fast, (I’ve kept a dozen gatf before and one has outgrew all the rest by a multiplier. Some of you may the familiar with it with its broad body, the one I linked is also of the same nature. This tank in Thailand is absolutely fantastic but I believe the adult gatf in the tank is of the other subtype, which I believe is the more common type. This is just my opinion and observation, can be totally wrong about this.

Here are some more fatalities, i forget what the cause was but she said that this monster gatf is just moody and sometimes just makes a dash for tankmates. Some of us may think it a small chase and clean bite to the tail or something but it’s actually happening at much more fatal spots from underneath. Like a sling shot dash going downwards and then strike up. My armatus (25”) actually recently took out my Chan a diplogramma (25”), RTGG (18”) and wild Oscar (13”) as well in the same manner. Quite unfortunate, I use to watch the armatus bully tankmates for territory but never saw a full big bite using fangs to puncture, guess he felt differently in the past few weeks.

Well that's what I try to keep in mind, a fish can nip instead of full on bite. Their nips still do damage because of their teeth though. That's why I always say fast and tough is the best bet with any big characin but you can only hope your fish is always in a good mood.

I believe ur correct in that assertion. I too have had 2 different gatf. One grew very little between 10 and 15 inchs in a little of a yr. Stayed longer and not as thick while the one i have now has grown tremendously since i got it at 12". Its already surpassing 18" and I've only had it for 6 mnths. Very tall body and thick sides. Also the aggression is higher as well as the attitude. Granted its in a much lrgr tank then it was in before but it was fed consistently live foods where as now i have it eating cut fish and SW as well. I do believe u are on to something. I have witnessed it myself and thought nothing of it til u mentioned something. Good job!

Some good news, I reached out to this individual and he is going to try and get some videos up on youtube so that I can share on this forum.

I saw some posts on Facebook that is looks like Wes fugupuff fugupuff has seen this tank in person. It is 32,000 gallons. I saw on your page that you have a friend with an even bigger tank. Is that the one with the giant amaira and gatf?

Well he just lost another gatf. Largest gatf took this one out. It had 10in on it and apparently recently started really going after it.
