So I have a beautiful Tigrinus for quite a while now. I was lucky enough to go from live to having it take Massivore pellets.

He/she is doing great and growing steadily. However being that the tank is in my bedroom, I began to realize that my rooms stunk like ***. I thought I managed to somehow put the tank in a mini-cycle which would have sucked since I know how sensitive tigs are.

Anyways, after monitoring the water, I found that it was not a problem with cycling, and further searching showed me that the smell could be from the
Massivore pellets. Even though I only feed enough pellets for him to gobble up in less than a minute, it still stinks.

So I was searching online to alternative foods and obviously came across the shrimps/scallops/squid/talapia alternatives. But I was wondering if prepackaged frozen shrimp (from fredmeyer or similar grocery stores) would be okay for the tig.

Considering the don't like salt very much, would these frozen shrimp contain too much salt for them? Are these prepackaged frozen shrimps the "market" shrimps that everyone feeds? Could I use bay shrimps since they don't require cutting up (but they are cooked)?

Should defrost them with water and prime?

Thanks guys!

Frozen shrimp are awsome..............A visit to the supermarket is fun and healthy for the budget...........Popcorn shrimp, 27-30 shrimp, prawns, are all favorites.......Pre-packaged krill found in the frozen section at the lfs is a must for once a day feedings alongside the pellets.............As for the MASSIVORE pellets, I use HIKARI color enhancing pellets..............

NOTE:When prepping the frozen products for feeding, let the food sit ina small tray of warm water for 10 minutes..............

Massivore pellets grow fish fast! FIsh love em....Try keeping the bag closed when you store them...put them in a jar or tuperware to keep it sealed well. IMO pellets are much better than shrimp etc. Id just deal with it if it were me....cause I do. My house cats love massivore pellets as well :)

Mine stink like **** too. Just have to put up with it until i can afford a whole lot of carbon

i would have to agree with just closing the bags. i keep a 220, 106 and 29 tall in my room and the food smell is the least annoying thing.

Thanks for the advice guys. I do seal the bag every time since I wanted the food to stay fresh. So the smell isn't from the bag, but definitely the water.

I usually do a wc 3 times a week so I don't think it's a lack of wc. My tig is about 12" now and I am trying to feed I lightly so that I don't give it any health problems in the future.

During my search for feeding frozen shrimp, I read another tig owner defrosting with prime in the water. Is that really beneficial for the tig or can I defrost it in tank water?

Also, I still want to make sure I am getting the right type of shrimp. Would the prepackaged bay shrimps with a zip lock seal work? Does it matter if it is cooked or raw?

Thanks again guys! :)

I have used all kinds and types of shrimp. All I do is look at the ing. list and as long as no preservatives are added I buy em up. I have used cooked before and I am not sure how much of a difference it made. If you can try and find ones with shells still on though.

...plain n simple all fish tanks have some smell and so does there foods along with pellets and frozen foods. just keep water clean and glass of tank clean filter and the lights and all also get jars for foods that hold in the smell better like mason jars. any shrimp is good i would think, i use the pre prepped market shrimp that comes frozen....never had a problem.

Get the raw shrimp, it doesn't matter what kind. Sealed in a bag is what most people buy, but any raw kind is fine as long as it is kept right. I was told to use cold water to defrost them. I get a cup ( usually use the same one now) and put 5-10 shrimp in the cup and add cold water and walk away for a little bit. It'll be thawed or close enough, if it has the shell I take it off then toss some in for the fish. Simple as that. Using Prime in the cold water doesn't matter, you will pick each shrimp up and toss it into the tank not dump the whole cup into the fish tank.

Frozen tilapia and others are perfectly fine also. Try to buy raw though, your tig in the wild might not be finding shrimp to eat in it's local habitat but I know for sure if it did it wouldn't be cooked.

I have all my fish trained on pellets, market shrimp, silver sides, live yellow labs, blood worms- and even some fruits and veggies.

The ONLY ones that won't eat any of the above is my Jag, and my senegal bichirs.

It's a mess in the tank- it clogs my filters- and yes, it makes my water smelly. I keep my container sealed, and I only feed what they can consume in about a minute) I am having to do water changes more often because of it- and scooping out of the massivore because someone decided to throw it up after being a pig and eating too much.

I'm going to buy some live worms and see what they think of them.

But, the tank is in my basement, so I don't have the worry about my room smelling like @$$. lol.
