^I would.

Snappers, if you mean Commons are far more interesting than matas. MAtas only interesting feature, imo, is their feeding behaviour and that is it.

I am not sure about the size of your tank, but you really could look into the smaller, but also very interesting Staurotypus turtles, be they the Salvinii or the Triporcatus.

( I keep them all, so my opinion, albeit solely an opinion, is based on some sort of experience )

A mata mata or an alligator snapper make poor pets once they get to be a few years old.

Mata Matas are very expensive and difficult to keep for all but the most experienced turtle keepers. Alligator snappers will out grow a large tank quickly and can be aggressive no matter what you do. Even a common snapper can be a dangerous "pet" as they are usually very aggressive.

Sounds like you need to do a little research first.

What makes Matas so hard to keep? I wouldn't consider me the most experienced, but I've managed alright?

mata mata's are not difficult but they are a bit more involved, you just need to monitor water chemistry and temp more than with most other turtles. basically, if you can keep a fish alive, you can keep a mata mata alive.

There are tons of issues surrounding what to feed them, water temp and chemical deviation, and ailments. As far as turtles go, they are among the most difficult. In this case, a mata mata is NOT appropriate especially when the office is closed 3 days a week.

i have never had a problem with it but it is up to the OP so, Cheetah, if you decide for the mata mata, I will send you a bunch of info on how I keep mine and where i got most of my info.
