So I've become interested in mata matas and was wondering a few things.

Substrate?
Tank Size?
and diet.

Any help is appreciated.

Some use very fine sand alongside some old soaked dead leafs for a natural look. Or bare botom
Tank Size?
Biggest you possibly can
and diet.
Small healty gutt loaded fish. Will also acept gost shrimp, earthworms and even pinky mice for big ones

Any help is appreciated.

thats all about right. I feed mine a variety of fish from a bait store nearby. A varied diet is a good diet and mine gets mud minnows, small channel cats, bighead minnows, tilapia, shiners, and the occasional rosy red.

Just be carefull on the catfish´s spikes but yup pretty good diet. Mosquitofish is super easy to breed and you could make a few outdoor tanks with it for emergency and reserve foods;)

great info guys.
So if I got a juvenile how long (what size) could it be in a 40 breeder and what would I need to upgrade to?

I just got one at the Indy reptile show over the weekend and you are going to love it. Everyone else covered what I've researched and found out from the breeder.

a 40 breeder will be fine for a while, just use a judgement call. these guys are sedentary so they dont need a huge tank but I do like the idea that the bigger the better because it provides further enrichment. You can usually find "babies" at about 4 inches for around $250. If they are captive bred (there are some out there now) you can get them as small as 1.5" and for about $400. below is a link to my set up.

If you get it small, that 40 breeder will last you many years.
