footprint means lengthXwidth, no height. standard 75gallons and 90gallons ARE the same footprint. Between these 2 tanks it wouldn't make a difference. It would be stupid to put a divider in a 4' tank, whether it be 1 day or 10 years. If your fish has been isolated for so long hes probably not going to accept a tankmate in a tank that size. If you do the divider and get a female, you'd be better off leaving the divider in there forever.
I agree. Once the divider is removed the male is most likely going to go right after the female. I've never had a successful pair of midas in anything less than a 6 foot tank. I've had a pair in a 75gal but I had to use a divider so the female could retreat to safety.

don't try it in a 4 footer. i had a 10" rd on his own for a while and tried a few times to get him a girl.

first was a 7" - basically killed it in 2 mins( i rescued her and she recovered don't worry!)

second was a 10" - see above

third was a 10" - same as above except when i put her in a hospital tank she laid eggs!!!

morale of story - if he's been a solo fish for a while you have no chance getting him a mate

perhaps u got a quire midas?

jk there just killing machines in general i think ures may just not actually be mature enough to know what females are for.

its not impossible ive seen it many of times.

man . it's all depend on the individual fish.. i had a phsycho male solo, he was about 25 cms+ in half of a 75g , he was ready to kill anything all the time including my fingers, then i add a 15cms female behind a divider..... 2 days later she was in his quarter ( never knew how she got in there).
lo and behold... he stop being aggro, she was bossing him arround lol, even my blackbelts pairs in the same tank bred.

I've seen a lot of pairs that one day snapped 2 years later.
Well yeah no kidding there are no guarantes when it comes to keeping large aggrresive cichlids.

It is totally dependent on the individual fish.

I have a 9" male (more RD'ish, big lips etc.) and a 7" creamsicle female (more Midas'ish, stout, heavily built), that I put temporarily in a 50gal breeder (36X18).
They were separated by eggcrate that was supported by large suction cups on both sides. After a couple weeks they started knocking the divider down, and I got tired of putting it back up. At first they would lip-lock, and since the male has big lips he didn't ever do any damage to the smaller female. They have been there for about 4 months now (yes, I know, not really temporary lol) and now don't even spar each other. They have spawned a few times and I have not bothered to take any fry out (of course, no room for them!), the fry get consumed after a while.

I await the day when they snap and fight to the death but have no other option right now until I get some time to set up another 75gal so that they may be separated.

If you do anything, just make sure your keep a close eye on the action.

Burt :)
