Where the Parachromis roam...
I own 2 Florida spotted Gars they are each about 9-10 inches, one of them is covered with spots while the other has spots but not as many,i noticed the better looking one kinda pushing the other into a spot in the tank, the also do a "dance"rubbing into each other, can this be a sign of mating???

no its a dominace thing. at that size they def arnt breeding age.

side note for solomon or someone, what age are all the gar ready for breeding?

no. at 9-10inches, your fish are a couple of months old at best (assuming there's not been any stunting), and are not sexually mature. Gar get sexually mature at a couple of years old, i'm not too sure with floridas, but female gators mature at 10-12 years of age, and female trops at 3-5 years of age (since we're on the topic, solomon was mentioning that cubans can be expected to be somewhere inbetween). i'd expect floridas to be somewhat similiar to t-gars.

gars will often rub against each other, it is a social or dominance display. in most cases (especially in aquariums), it's nothing more than that. gars can vary greatly in pattern and i wouldn't read too much into the fact that one has more spots than the other.

finally, there are a few misconceptions you seem to have abot gar that are pretty basic. do read through the stickies (especially the Official Garticles) and do some reading through the forum, it will benefit you loads.

cheers & welcome to gar territory,
xander

interesting thread, on this subject of gars breeding, do the little species like floridas and spotted gars ever get bred in tanks? has anyone on this forum done it?

I've only heard of them being bred in outdoor ponds, but I am sure with the right system (note: huge) they can be bred.

Interesting, how big a tank are we talking here? anyone know for sure?

And DCOWBOYS, don't sweat it mate, you will pick up how to keep gars really quickly. (basically they are really simple). I had one in a system where an external filter leaked, about 3/4 of the water was on my floor instead of the tank. so the tank is rectified and a new filter bought, installed and the whole tank went down with white spot ( except the gar) he was absolutely bullet proof ( he was a florida by the way). treated the tank and every one recovered. just awesome fish mate.

All the best,

G
