anybody have any experience with matrix rock from seachem? If so, my question is I am using it on an Fluval FX5 and I wanted to know what else I should throw in with the matrix rock if anything at all. I never use carbon or the ammonia removers though.

Matrix is good bio media. I use the big stuff (pond matrix) in my sump filters. Works great, holds a lot of bacteria. I would suggest putting a pre filter of some kind before the matrix to keep the crap out of it. Should be all you need. I don't use the FX-5, but I'm sure the matrix would work well in it.

:iagree:

I saw that matrix stuff at my lfs! Would it be better than bioballs in a 30 gallon sump? I want to make my sump better and keep thinking that other stuff must hold more bacteria than bioballs.

the lowest layer in my filter will have this cotton looking media that will hold all the crap. water should be running straight through the matrix rocks.

It will for sure hold more bacteria than bioballs, just use a prefilter to keep debris out of it.

I use matrix in all my filstars, so far I'm pleased with the results as my bio loads are high. Just make sure you prefilter with some type of screening.:headbang2 :headbang2
