I have a lot of tanks....Maybe more like 500, but I have/need a TON of it...I am always worried it will dissolve...It seems to be a lot more smooth than when I bought it. And by 80's I mean 88 lol And yes I had UGF on my tanks then, and some box filter looking things...And always the scuba-diver that goes up and down when attached to an air pump...hahaha

LOL when my parents had there store in the early 90s they had one of those damn things in almost ALL the tanks. or the one with the treasurechest that opened and closed with the bubbles.

Now back on track I personally use Bio-max thatbeing said I use it in all my tanks but one. and not trying Matrix idk if it's better or not. I just used what hagen told me to lol ..

Matrix isn't a bad media by any means, but it hasn't held up as well as others IME. That being said, Substrat pro has always done good by me, and has never given me a problem. It isn't cheap though. Filling up all of my canisters with it was not cheap. Generally it runs $25/Liter of volume. Filling my pro 3 sucked. Cell pore can be had online, but I haven't seen it in a store ever. I wouldn't spend the money on it though.

well i run 16L now of matrix in my sump in 100 micron filter bags it has never clogged and kept my params in check.... even in bottom bags started to get De nitrification..... i like bio max and love the eheim.... but having both weather be in seperate tanks or in the sump with matrix never noticed a difference.... im about to order 5 more 4L buckets of it... great media for a great price.... eheim and bio max are more money for not too much more of anything.... Just mo/me though....

one other thing im curious on.... if you have more surface area but it clogs quicker how is that more beneficial to your tank???

With good prefilters, more surface area will house more bacteria.

Seachem's Matrix is very poor when compared to biomax or ehfisubstrat, sorry I do not have the info for ehfisubstrat pro.

Hagan Biomax each ceramic ring contains at least 100 square feet of surface area x approx 66 rings per liter = 6600 sq. ft. of surface area per liter.

Eheim EHFISUBSTRAT with over 450 m2 per liter = 4842 sq. ft. of surface area per liter.

Seachem Matrix™ provides over 160,000 cm2 per liter = 170 sq. ft. of surface area per liter.

having all 3 i wont complain about the others being good media... the price on eheim sucks... i purchased 12L of matrix for what 2L if eheim would have cost and about 4L of biomax..... i have a large sump so id rather have good Q of decent bio media than have small amount of great bio.... for the amount of media bags i have to be filled with eheim would cost me over 300$... i love the matrix it kept my tanks water perfect and even started de nitrification at its highest stock level.... its damn good bang for the buck.... i wish i could afford to use nothing but eheim substrate pro... but my wallet wont let me....

I heard that it has small surface area for the BB compared to Bio Max (i believe is cheaper) and Eheim pro, and it clogs really easy but again i dont know first hand.

The surface area seems like it would be pretty large when combining a bunch together. You can fit more in a space than bio max which means you could have more contact time and more surface area. With bio Max you have larger gaps between the media which means more water passes through without coming in contact with the media.

It only cloggs easy if you use it as mechanical filtration as a lot of people do. Personally, I get mad when people say that because bio filtration is not supposed to be used for mechanical filtration. You shouldn't have to rince your bio media or even touch it when cleaning your filter. Use filter fiber or some other fine particle filtration media to keep the media clean and you shouldn't have an issue.

See bdericks above post. Seachem's media doesn't come close to the others in surface area. Bio-media doesn't have to be rinsed if your filter is maintained properly.
