Staring to get intrested in getting one down the road and doing some research. Desciding on tank size I'll need for one. Honestly I have read and heard MBU's are easier going, plus I like their coloration better. I have read Fahaka's get around 18-22" while MBU's get 26-30". Anyone got a straight answer by chance? These are just estimates from sites mind you, some said Fahaka's only get 6"+ which I know is BS.

Also, with these do I need brakish water or will they be fine in fresh. Heard both ways on this but I want to hear it from the experts we have here on MFK.

Thanks for all replies for the "Cichlid guy" thats got bit by the "Puffer bug". lol

My local pet store had a Mbu that was close to 36". They are fresh water throughout their lives. I think it's the much smaller spotted puffers that start fresh, then brackish, then finally all salt.

Fahaka and MBU's are both 100% Freshwater ONLY... so no need to add any salt...

as for sizes, expect a Fahaka to top at at around 18"-22" and MBU's to top out at around 3ft total...

As for tank sizes, a Fahaka minimum tank size is around 125G+, and a MBU, realistically your looking at roughly 600G+ due to waste etc...

Hopefully that helps answer some of your questions...

I wouldn't expect a fahaka to get larger than 16-18". We have a 28" mbu on TPF now.

I would even suggest a 800+ gallon for an MBU. I have a Fahaka in a 55 gal right now, as he's only 4", but am in the process of setting up a 180 ( with sump of 30 gals ) for him.

^ Normally i say 1000G for a MBU, but got sick of people complaining that they don't need a tank that size, so now i just say 600-800 just to put people off first... and if i see they are serious, then i tell them that try and get 1000G if possible...
