Maximum unsupported span?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am facing the same situation, my tank is acrylic (8x2x2 = 240gal)... but I plan on using 1 1/8" floorboard (plywood, not fibreboard) on top. WITH the floorboard, should I worry about sag?

What material you use as the base for the acrylic isn't as important as making sure that base is properly supported underneath.

Just some advice i have a 450 that exploded from being on a poorly made stand. Took me a couple months to put it back together. Im glad it exploded in someones elses house and i got it for $400 but this had to be a SERIOUS mess to clean up. not to mention bad for the fish lol. I support my acrylic tanks every 1' underneath 2' max on some of my smaller tanks. most acrylic tanks i buy used have bowed bottoms because of poor stands. The 450 i repaired was cracked across the entire 8ft. bottom and the back wall popped off on one side. Rule of thumb, if your worried about it and asking ?'s just throw in some more material/supports to beef it up. Anything i make is overbuilt even in steel stand construction. IF you think you can park a small car on it. you should be good four your tank lol...happy building everyone

I agree with others who have said 4' is too long a span to go unsupported. If you are using 2x4's I would have a vertical support at least every 2'.

If you're working with steel I-beams, you can get away with longer unsupported spans. Not mine...found it on another site...so gangster! :headbang2

Thats a standard 125g tank on the bottom. The top of stand was designed for a 240g tank but only has a 180g in the pic.
