Okay, can these guys tolerate freshwater, or do they need brakish water? And if they can live in freshwater, but came from a brakish water tank, i assume i need to acclimate them over time, right?

And how fast do they grow?

Thanks,
Art:):headbang2:D:grinno:

all can live in FW, ATs and ITs are the ones kept in brackish waters. just drip acclimate them for a while, add a bit of salt to your tank after a big WC(its not gonna hurt anyone).

they grow slow :D

AT's and NGT's are the only Dats found in brackish waters. All others (IT, ST, NTT) are fresh water fish.

People do however keep brackish dats in fresh successfully.

Hey guys, I've got a newbie question too. I'm in the midst of planning a 125g planted tank, and am weighing my options as far as species go. Could any dat's be kept in a 125g for life? I'm trying to decide between dat's and crenicichla, but if the dat's get too big for a 125 my question is already answered. Thanks.

Depends on what species of Dat you want. They can stay as small as 12" or get 2 feet big, depending on what kind you get.

Thanks. What species would y'all experts reccomend for a 125? Also, can dat's and crenicichla (pike cichlids) coexist?

ATs are the smallest, usually topping out at about 12"...but 10" is more common.

NGTs are the next smallest at roughly 14", followed by NTTs at about 16" (and that's a BIG NTT).

It takes a while for these guys to hit their maximums, so you would be able to keep them in a 125 for quite some time.

You shouldn't have any problems with a pike in there. As always, just make sure they have retreats and visual barriers...but I wouldn't be worried.

AT's and NGT's are obviously species (or subspecies.) What are these abbreviations for? Sorry again for all the newb questions, still trying to learn a little more about these fascinating fish :)

N/M - I checked the sticky ID thread and found out all the abbreviations.
