I find it varies by species. Some look much better over black, others look worse. Geophagus 'Tapajos orange-heads' and Apistogramma cacatuoides come to mind as ones I've seen that don't as example.

+1 it varies by species if you put that Mayan and jag over a coffee or dark brown gravel it will bring out their gold base more. With the black that jag just looks stressed.
