Mayan cichlid progression

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Interesting, I guess I'll have to wait to see what it will turn into. It is a little annoying as this is not the first time I've had the same thing happen at my LFS. And they do not take trade ins whatsoever either so I have to end up driving for about an hour to the next LFS if something doesn't work out.

That being said, I really like this guy as hes shown a lot of personality and always very eager to eat anything.

I guess the big question mark here is going to be how big hes going to get and what kind of temperament I can expect.

Thanks for the input! I'll update this thread as he grows

With hybrids there is "no" knowing what they will be, because they are a hybrid (a mutt).
Any hybrid can look like the mother, the father, or something, or nothing in-between .
It could stop growing suddenly, or reach over a foot.
Looks like some Herichthys in there so probably a foot.
A store will often sell a fish under the name it was dropped off as, so if some mutt creator down the street tells them usopthalmus, who are they to say any different.
If you like the fish, that's good.
Just don't ever sell its fry as anything other than a mutt (Hybrid)

. . . I'm so negative about random hybridization, not about the fish itself, but the lack consideration for true identity, is ridiculous, verging on fraud..

As a scientist I understand; but as a naturalist I realize the difficulties to ID even representative specimens. Also, that creatures have been crossing genes for eons without our involvement.

They don't care about our sketches and photos, and the words we toil over. That's our human problem with each other, & we do fuss about it.

Anyhow . . . When the iGene DNA scanner hits the market around 2025, it will all be moot on our end. ;)

(But just think of the paternity suits! There's the real market.)

Or............all those guys that were told Randy is "your son", when in reality, Randy was fathered by Bubba at the 7/11.

yeah would love to see how he turns out in the future for you really attractive fish though I do understand your frustration in buying something mislabelled as something else but in this hobby just takes one person to mis id something then inform other individuals in the trade who just take this as fact its vicious cycle of mis information as innocent as it can be

I agree w/ this. It’s probably what happens most of the time. Especially when you are dealing w/ fry or young cichlids, they tend to look very similar.
