Again, can any provide any info on these guys other than what I've read. Just looking for some personal experiences. If you have one could you post a pic as well.

Mayans? Definitely interesting in the wild but the don't appeal to me in the aquarium. I have two and don't find their character or looks to be that great. Nothing to write home about. I have thought about adding them to a brackish set-up as an experiment though. If you're going to order from Rapps there's so many others to choose from that outdo Uro's IMO.

i have had Mayans before and they are a great fish....
can be very aggressive and bright colors when breeding..
personality is like any other large aggressive cichlid...
will grow in excess of 12 inches so watch who you put them with....
feed them foods rich in carotine to bring out the red/orange color

Good advice, krill helps to bring out some orange in Mayans.

had one briefly, very aggressive even as a juvenile, and have to agree with earlier, not worth getting if the possibility is there to acquire something else from Rapps

ever come down to south Florida? you can go to just about any local pond or canal and catch your very own ;)

I've never owned one, but I've observed their behavior down here, and I think they're pretty cool fish; great color, if you like that black/orange contrast look . . .

I don't know if that was directed at me, but I see them all the time in the canals, and they are a pretty common fish in the hobby if you want one...I assume if someone wants something with that look just go for a festae, which look much better

was that "directed at" you?

no, that was directed at the OP . . . it was a joking reference to how common Mayans are down here, that's all . . . heck, you're in Miami, so why would I ask if you "ever come down to south Florida"? :D

i have a breeding pair and again they are ok just nothing to showy. I kinda thinkin about getting rid of them just so i can have the tank space.

So other than krill, what else would you feed the Mayans to bring out their color????
