I have a mayan at about 4" that I like an all...but after finding out it was a mayan and not a festae and really has no hope of great color I find myself less than amazed with him. I was contemplating switching him out for a blackbelt of similiar size...what would you do/which one is more aggressive?

If you want a lot of color, I would definitely advise you go for Blackbelt. Personally, I feel there are only handful cichlids as beautiful as Blacklelt (atleast those that I have seen).

I can not comment on the aggression level of mayan, but I can say the blackbelt are quite tough. I saw a few pairs that spawned alongside these guys (not my tank!):

And they weren't getting pushed too much.

Go for Blackbelt if you have space - they are quite beautiful compared to Mayans.

I think it's becuase they are expecting the wild bright colors of the festae ... though from what I've seen, mayan's tend to have more interesting behavior, though I'm had rather limited experience with both species.

That Camphilophus is deffinately one of the prettiest mayan's I've seen. That blue lacing on the body is wild. I think it also depends on the mayan race, some are really drab and others, like yours, are quite pretty.

mayans are way cooler than festae IMO. I don't understand why so many people are so dissapointed when they buy red terrors and they end up being festae. Here is one of mine.

Here's why

If you want color and owner responsiveness, go with the Black Belt.

I was just upset because the LFS I go to has a breeding pair of festae's, so I just kind of assumed hte young juvi i bought was a festae, but it was a mayan. With them having both in the store you would think they would know better
