Was in a LFS getting some stuff, checked out their stock just to look. I don’t buy fish from this LFS anymore because the quality just isn’t there. I was supprised to see very young Mayans for sale. Not only that, but for the same price as Festae. I’m only shocked because usually festae cost more. Not only the festae, but any other CA/SA cichlid. The thing is Mayans are one of the most common fish found in NA and CA. Heck, you can catch your own in FL. Just thought $15 for fish around 2” was a ridiculous price.
I would like to have a pair or group of Mayans one day, they are very cool fish IMO, but not buying from that place because everything I’ve bought before has had ich, or bloat.

Mayans are alot rarer in the hobby, festae are one of the most popular large cichlids about with no end of fry available.

But it always has seemed there is a lot more demand for festae, and many people get disappointed when they find out they bought the wrong fish. I think they may be rarer because of the demand for festae was much greater. It is interesting they are the same price, because that indicates both are in equal demand. I have looked to buy Mayans in the past and couldn’t find them. I agree they are much rarer in the hobby. If I do decide to make a change or set up another tank, I’d just email or ask a few people. Probably could find them that way.

funny that festae seem to be more common in the hobby now, I remember what Toiletcar Toiletcar is talking about as well, lots of people pissed that they were sold mayans instead of festae. I guess I can understand how that works, since much less people probably bred mayans. I know I can still buy mayans at Petland Discounts labeled "red terror" (I am sure they are mayans) for under 10$ each.

Uropthalmus were a staple at almost every LFS in Milwaukee a little over 10 years ago, and could be had for less than $5 each (especially after my pair spawned regularly) and I saturated the market ( could barely give them away).
That said, I believe the best (and most fun way) to get them these days, would be to take a Florida vacation. They are in almost every ditch, golf course water trap, or ponded subdivision, from Naples on south.

Found these in a canal just west of Everglades City, 50 ft from the main highway.

Yeah under $10 is a typical price (at least in the U.S.). Of course the demand and price could be different in other countries.
I also can’t justify paying a higher premium for low quality fish. If they were f1 from a desirable catch location, then maybe I’d pay but they are not. There is a lot of variation in Mayans too. Some are much more colorful than others. When you buy tank raised fish, you don’t know if you are getting something that looks nice or drab in color.

It does seem pricey-

But where are festae widely available? I see them maybe once a year at the best local store I know of in MA?
I don’t see Mayans commonly eaither but when I do you see a 4-6” for $10

Here in the UK I can get festae easily through some of the groups I am in. Mayans I don't see very often, there not imported regular and not widely breed in the hobby.
