Mayan price

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It does seem pricey-

But where are festae widely available? I see them maybe once a year at the best local store I know of in MA?
I don’t see Mayans commonly eaither but when I do you see a 4-6” for $10

The thing is they probably not that common as in at every LFS. But you can always find them on aquabid, Rapps, and COA. Probably The Wet Spot too. They are are very popular in the hobby where Mayans are not.

Edit: it’s probably some LFS that make the Mayan/festae mix up. I’ve seen a lot of mislabeling over the years. This is one reason I rather pay the $$ in shipping.

Here in the UK I can get festae easily through some of the groups I am in. Mayans I don't see very often, there not imported regular and not widely breed in the hobby.

That’s what I was thinking-there is a difference where.
It’s interesting that some species are easily found in one country but not all. Another example is thorichthys species seem like they are more popular in the UK. Like helleri for example, you can get them there, but it is very difficult to find them here. Festae is popular everywhere it seems, and rightfully so. They are amazing fish.

I would agree with those sentiments, Rapps has had them atleast once every 3 months- and local fish stores vary, I live in a heavily Victorian/Malawi area (unfortunately)
But... that LFS that I see them at occasionnly will buy all of fry if you have any, happily.

They have Mayans
as well but you can tell by the tail blotch.

I would love to find other mayaheros species like the zebra one

Here they are in their endemic natural habitat in the Cenotes of Mexico, although I have also seen they in sea water salinity (miles off the coast) in the mangrove lagoon on Isla de Mujeres.
Azul imovie edit

Very cool. I was hoping to see other cichlids, but this seems typical-mostly Mayans. Some cenotes seem dominated by Mayans or JDs. That part of Mexico nearly everything is connected. Salt and freshwater meet. I’ve even seen saltwater fish in places that were supposed to be “freshwater”.
But what I am really interested in is seeing variations of different catch locations. I have never seen any offered for sale like what you would see in other cichlid species like thorichthys. I want to see the differences in location from location.

funny that festae seem to be more common in the hobby now, I remember what Toiletcar Toiletcar is talking about as well, lots of people pissed that they were sold mayans instead of festae. I guess I can understand how that works, since much less people probably bred mayans. I know I can still buy mayans at Petland Discounts labeled "red terror" (I am sure they are mayans) for under 10$ each.

Terror rojo is the Mexican name for the fish so they’re not lying lol
