They multiply by the thousands if conditions are right. They can bust up pumps, clog drains, and just get into spaces where nothing should be. My LFS has to pick them out of the sumps by the handfuls. If you starve them and they start dying, you get stink water.

But they also...

1 - stir your substrate
2 - eat decaying/dying plants
3 - feed hungry puffers (only ones with beaks/jaws strong enough to crush the shells)
4 - as stated, have a good "style"

I have them in 3 tanks and love them.
