Mbu (s)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Generally I hear they can be a little aggressive, but not overly aggressive, they could probably be housed together in a large enough tank. Ideally 1000gallon per puffer for the happiest and longest living fish, atleast 300 to 400 gallons each can be doable I read. Puffers are intelligent and love decoration, you would want to have some breaks in their lines of sight, and multiple hideouts. Fights over one cage is not fun for the puffers and fish love a place to hide and feel secure. I'm new so this is mostly regurgitation, but you'll probably have someone with more experience post soon to confirm or deny what I've stated lol.

Hey Rudy. Long time my friend. I am currently keeping 2 mbus together that I got off of Oliver. They are getting along great with no signs of aggression whatsoever. In fact they swim together all day happily bumping into each other and often sharing their curiosity when one spots something that interests it. They were introduced at the same time and are approx. the same length. I am moving them to a larger tank today so we'll see if they keep their temperament.

Good Luck with the move, we are thinking of a 8ftx 4ftwide x 3ft H for ours eventually, got the local glass/acrylic Glazer shop interested. They keep marine so may get some help as he wants to build a large tank for himself..

Hey bud! How are ya? Ya Oliver was my thought as well except I really would rather get a captive one. (one that has been in captivity for a while) My other one is a gentle mbu who can live with anything so thought I would give it a whirl but don't want to lose her to a parasite!

Thanks for the help all and if the opportunity arrives I will let you know

unless you have a 2000+ g aquarium ignore all suggestions encouraging such practice. Its a disaster waiting to happen and is most certain pending death.

I'm going to play the devil's advocate position here and say that I would not be so hasty to say that you couldn't keep two Mbu together. Mbu have a whole different energy level than Fahaka (or at least the Fahaka I have seen...). For example, Fahaka seem to be fish killers whereas Mbu are not.

I'm not about to run out there and buy another Mbu just to see what happens but I would definitely not make a blanket statement like "it won't work". The guy, above, appears to not be having any issues, at least for the time being. We "assume" a lot of things about Mbu, based on what Fahaka do but the reality is that there are not many of us who have had adult Mbu for long periods of time and even less, who tried something like this. So, I'm not saying it would work but if we are just looking at the evidence, there is moe to suggest it could than it couldn't.

Just my 2-cents.
