Hi, for my birthday im getting a 40 gallon bowfront tank, and i was wondering if it could house a few Mbuna African Cichlids? Also how would i set up the tank?
Yes you could do about 10 to 15 if thats all you plan to have in the tank thats no plecos and cats so that you can keep down the bioload in the tank. I would give alot of rock and cave formation. Use sand and gravel so that they can dig and make themselves at home. Make sure you have ample filtration at least 2.5 times the amount size of tank but more never hurts at all. Its good to keep some airstones or bubble rods all so in the tank for more oxygen and what make this cool is that you can take a normal dec and customize it with bubbles coming out of it. Also keep heat to about 79-80 F and feed a balanced diet of a good flake and something like blood worms and vegies are also great. Hope this is some help to you
How long is the tank? If under 4' long you will pretty much have to stick to dwarf mbuna. Maybe 2 species with 5 individuals per species with a ratio of 1male per 4 females. You'll want to have good filtration on the tank and keep up with water changes. Decorate the tank with lots of rocks to create many caves and hiding places. Sand is a great substrate for mbuna tanks, they love to dig. Feed them a good quality pellet that has a lower protein percentage. They also like fresh veggies and veggie flakes. Avoid meaty foods which can give mbuna bloat.
would saulosi, yellow labs and acei work?
what type of rocks should i use granite, river rock, or limestone? also would white sand and a black background look good and bring out their colors?
Thankyou!
