Yellow labs and female soulosi look a lot a like. I would pick a different species like rusties, Iodotropheus sprengera. Most types of rocks will work fine. I like the look of river rock but it can be difficult to stack.
I know a lot of people use lace rock and it can be rough. I would think they might tear some fins but I've seen rocks like this work pretty well otherwise. They are tough fish.
