Mbunas and Live Plants?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I do the same basically...

lots of water changes, at least 20-30% weekly.
phos. remover in my W/D.
timer on a 7 hour cycle now. Was 9 hours but to much algae.
BN, L104, L190, L066. All keep algae on the glass in check.

My lights are VHO 50/50s which I need to change at least 1 to a Daylight. I think my W/D doesn't help for CO2. I do have a big bio-load, but have a 110 in my garage. I would just like the algae to not grow on my plants.

Oh well.....

I am only guessing, but it sounds that it may work if it is heavily planted. I have not been able to make it work, even with plants that were "suitable" for Mbuna. Would that help, if it were stocked big time?

Many mbuna are herbavore. They will eat most plants. I use all rockwork in my tanks. Plus the higher ph and hard water that most people keep them at makes it harder for plants to thrive.

I once attempted to pot (terra cotta) my plants and wax the plants in. It worked for about a week until my mbunas jarred the wax loose which floated to the top. I have since anchored my plants with fishing line and suction cups--after a while they left them alone (the anklet around the elephant trick).

i got some plants java fern think its some kind of sword and some weird plants i got for $1.50 they have all been untouched in my tank
stocking is:
3 yellow tail acei
4 yellow labs
and 2 johanni hope pics work

I have since added an L236, L200 (Green Phantom) and a Gold Nugget. All are doing well. I threw in some Zucchini a couple of nights ago. They weren't all that excited about the Zucch. I'm gonna add more tonight to see if they go for it.

My anubias nana is starting to grow and everything else is doing OK. My Crypt Wendtii seems to lose stalks. Not sure if it will make it. They aren't attacking the leaves, just the stalks about midway up. My Java Fern are doing well too.
