yeah i know they are vegan but still no fish makes better dieters. My rainbow fish get eaten, my giant diano eaten.

Convicts survive a while but eventually get torn up, only mbuna stay in perfect condition

with RD red wolf and big pike cichlids

I can add any amount of mbuna and they always are okay

Add too many and you might find out just why they have a reputation of being killers.

I don't know much about mbunas but I've had a group of african tiger scats with my monsters and they're amazing dithers. They're also killers, so you gotta watch out what kind of fish you add with them.

A fried of mine kept mbuna in a 220 with 2 pairs of festae, and the tank worked well, always looked geographically incorrect to me, but to each there own.
I also read an article in Cichlid News Mag where the author used mbuna as target fish in a tank with beanii, the new worlds probably don't consider mbuna, real cichlids .

Maybe it's the colour and shape that makes them different. Geographically incorrect isn't bad as long as the fish get on. My tanks are loosely correct, by continent

I've kept mbuna with big cichlids ("Vieja" and Crenicichla)... worked well. Mbuna wasn't noticeably stressed by the experience. The same cannot be said of other fish I've tried as dithers.

My polypterus subtly act as dithers for my African knives, not as targets but it brings them out.

Mbuna seem interesting enough though
