so i believe my car has a blown rod. im just trying to figure out if buying a new engine is the only way to fix it? or if yo can buy certain parts? also if you know cars what engines will fit into a 1998 chevy malibu ls? please and thank you.

how do you know it has blown a rod? give me some details

You can just replace a few parts to fix it if it has a blown rod, but this is something you generally take to the mechanics. You would have to replace the rod/s, rod bearings, and any damaged pieces.

1998 Malibus typically had the 3.1L V6 in them I think.

looks like the engines that came in the 1998 Chev Malibu were a 2.4L DOHC and the 3.1L V-6.

the first thing you need to know is if your diagnosis is correct. what are the symptoms? what happened, exactly to make you think this is the problem? and are you still driving the car?

assuming your diagnosis is correct: like Pharoah said, the parts are cheap, but it's major surgery on the engine and only a qualified technician should be doing it.

I dropped a valve once, lots of banging and smoke.

and are you still driving the car?
A car can't be driven with a blown rod

Edit: Even a broken PUSHROD would damage the car before long making it undriveable.

Not necessarily true. I had a three cylinder car that had thrown two rods through the engine block. I drove the car home before changing the engine. The car actually ran fairly well.

If your talking a main rod(that connects to a crank) there's no way. With it loose inside the engine it would punch a hole in the oil pan thus the engine would lose all the oil and the engine would shut down(bearings would melt).

Now pushrods are slightly different but again with metal loose inside the motor it could over time scar the engine or damage the valve cover

war, apparently you're not understanding my question..

i asked if she was still driving the car because there is a question about the diagnosis.

No i am not driving the car, it hasnt ran for almost a year now. I am not sure what happened went camping one night and my car was stolen from there, called the cops and it was in a ditch not running. I will be having a mechanic do all of this for me as he knows his cars he told me it was a blown rod, which is what i had thought from the beginning before i even met him lol. cant remember all of the questions x.x.

IMO, you are better off buying a crate engine than attempting to repair that engine by bits and pieces. with a crate engine you get a warranty and if your mechanic is reputable he will stand behind his installation 100% and you will drive away happy.
