I'm not very knowledgeable about the aros, but why are certain breeds illegal to keep? I know they are endangered, but the ones you purchase online come from hatcheries. Because of their size and aggression, are they afraid people will release them into lakes when they get too big, and native species would suffer?

It's because they are endangered in the wilds. Which is stupid because every asian aro I've ever heard of in the trade has been captive bred from some asian aro farm, not taken from wild stock.

Should have gotten a permit dummy...

Lol,dummy...What he should have done was kept his mouth shut instead of giving in to the urge to brag about his fish. Now he is out of number one,a good bit of money that he probably paid for the fish, number two,how ever much money he will have to pay in fines and legal fees, and most importantly, the loss of freedom he's had to endure.

No big surprise. It's not like we haven't warned the membership countless times that this site has members that work at various DNR and F&W branches. We've had vendors and other members hauled in for possessing illegal species in the past. Does anyone really believe they'd stop looking?

For those who didn't know, there's a sticky in the Marketplace Forum of Restricted Species listed by state. It'd be best to check out your state's laws before making your purchases. There are also threads concerning the federal lists, Endangered Species Act, Lacey Act, and C.I.T.E.S.
