I bought 50# bag of crushed quartz pool filter sand for about $8 to do a substrate change on a 36 gallon tank. Before room pic. I had lots of buckets to keep fish in and water in to put back in so I would not do a 100% water change.
(Make sure you are good and thirsty!) Second pic showing gravel and background which was too distracting.

Tank has an Aquaclear 70 filled with bio-media, big whisper filter with driftwood attached to intake to hide pipe. Used a black garbage bag for background. I always wanted to do live plants. I added some anchored in lava rock. Some are plastic. The jury is still out.

Looks great!

I converted all my tanks (2X 55, 29 and 20) to PFS recently-I'm happy and the fishies are happy.

Like the idea of tying driftwood to the filter intake to hide it; may "borrow" the idea!
